Who Am I?
Hello! I’m M T Islam Sajib, based in Mirpur, Dhaka. By profession, I’m an ex-banker — currently working as an Accounts Head at a company. But outside of office hours, whatever free time I get, almost all of it goes into my balcony and rooftop garden. Honestly, this is the one place where I never hold back — whatever I have to give, I pour it all in here.
Alongside plants, aquariums are another big passion of mine — I keep both freshwater and saltwater fish. I also love working with travel, but that’s a story for another day. Today, let me tell you how someone who once couldn’t keep a single plant alive turned his rooftop and balcony into a little jungle.
How My Relationship With Plants Began
To be honest, I was never a gardener. In the beginning, whatever I planted would die one way or another — sometimes because of bad soil, sometimes from overwatering. So I genuinely had no interest in this at all.
The real passion for plants belonged to my younger sister. Back when she was in school, she’d skip meals and spend her entire tiffin money on plants, completely absorbed in caring for them. Thanks to her devotion, our balcony kept filling up with new greenery.
Then one day, she moved abroad. And from that day on, the responsibility fell on my shoulders — to water and care for the plants she left behind, to keep them alive. That’s when a stubborn resolve took root in me: these plants will not die on my watch.
Watering every morning, examining each leaf and branch one by one — this became my routine. I started digging through books and videos to learn proper care techniques. And today, that rooftop has practically become a jungle, and so has the balcony.
What I Know About This
My learning about plants didn’t come from any classroom textbook — it came from hands-on trial and error, killing plants, and trying again. I’ve built real experience around Mirpur’s climate, working within limited rooftop and balcony space — which plants survive here and how, what grows best in which season, and what the right balance of water and soil looks like.
Working with aquariums alongside this has also taught me that keeping any living thing alive — whether fish or plants — requires the same things: patience and consistent daily care. Keeping freshwater fish is relatively easy, but learning to keep saltwater fish taught me just how much more delicate and demanding that work really is.
That said, I’ll admit one thing honestly — I’m not a commercial agriculturist. My experience is entirely rooted in rooftops, balconies, and home gardening.
Where I Found the Gap
In the early days, when the responsibility of keeping my sister’s plants alive first landed on me, I searched through countless books and videos. But most of what I found was either foreign content — recommending soil or fertilizer that simply isn’t available in Mirpur’s nurseries — or, in Bengali, either superficial two-line posts or advice written by someone who’d never planted a single pot themselves.
I could never find an honest, practical answer to the question: in Dhaka’s heat, on a real budget, using materials available at the local nursery — how do you actually turn a balcony or rooftop green?
My Plan to Fill This Gap
So I decided — the answers I couldn’t find myself, I would write myself. Everything I share here has been tested hands-on, on my own rooftop and balcony. I won’t just tell you “what to do” — I’ll tell you “what I did and what I got from it,” including the mistakes I made and what simply didn’t work.
What You’ll Find On This Site
This site is mainly for those who want to start a garden from scratch in a city flat or rooftop, or for those who’ve tried and failed repeatedly and given up on plants altogether. Here, I’ll mainly write about: complete rooftop and balcony garden setup guides, season-based plant care, simple home remedies for keeping plants alive, and occasionally, some experiences with aquariums and terrariums too.
Final Thoughts
The questions I couldn’t find answers to seven or eight years ago — I’m now gathering all those answers in one place, for you. If you’ve ever felt discouraged after failing to keep your very first plant alive, know this — I once killed every single plant I owned too. This site is exactly for you.
Drop any gardening questions in the comments — I try to answer them myself. Let’s turn green, together.
